Völvumyrkvi / Notes for Unknowing

Developed during a month-long residency in East Iceland (Neskaupstaður), Völvumyrkvi is an ongoing enquiry into mythology, memory, landscape and the shifting boundaries of perception. Culminating in a three-month exhibition at Þórsmörk, Neskaupstaður.

Beginning with research into the Völva — the Norse seeress who moved between worlds — and the Völvuleiði, her grave in the landscape above Reyðarfjörður and Eskifjörður. The film reimagines the nine realms of Norse cosmology as shifting states of consciousness, moving through memory, perception, imagination and the psyche. Drawing on varðlokkur, songs and sounds associated with calling and guiding spirits, sound becomes a vehicle for crossing thresholds. Völvumyrkvi approaches mythology as a living structure through which we might travel inward, return, repeat and become something else.

The project culminated in Notes for Unknowing, a closing performance during the Festival of Darkness (Dagar myrkurs) in October 2026. Combining extended reading, text, sound and light, the performance became an attempt to touch the unknown: an invocation of twilight, an exercise in organised forgetting.
